Special Characters

There are a number of special characters that you may need to use in your Web page, especially if you design a scientific or mathematical Web page. In a word processor, you can simply insert these characters, but in HTML you must specify the characters with the use of escape code, or escape character. An escape character tells the browser that what comes next should be interpreted and displayed as a special character. The escape character in HTML is the ampersand sign (&). At the end of the escape code put a semicolon (;) to let the browser know that it has reached the end of the code. Table 3.1 shows a list of special characters used in foreign language. Table 3.2 shows special characters that are used in math, science, or business authoring. Since HTML makes use of the less than sign, greater than sign, ampersand, and quote, the first four codes in table 3.2 show you how to make the browser display these characters.
